Evaporative humidifiers, also known as "cool mist" humidifiers, are devices designed to treat the air by emitting a cloud of cooled water vapor through its vents. In order to accomplish this, the device first draws water from its reservoir tank down to its base unit; a wicking filter then pulls the water upwards while removing a variety of impurities. Once the water reaches the upper section of the filter, fans blow cool air through the filter, creating the vapor cloud.
Step 1
Inspect the room where you plan to install the humidifier. Note the location of the wall outlets and select one nearest a level, elevated surface that is water-resistant and well away from any heating elements. This surface will serve as your installation area. If the surface is not water resistant, place a glass or plastic tray onto the surface.
Step 2
Lift the humidifier upward and place it on the surface or tray. Grip the handle attached to the top of the humidifier's water reservoir. Pull the reservoir up until it detaches from the base unit. Carry the reservoir over to a nearby sink.
Step 3
Flip the reservoir over and unscrew the cap located on the bottom panel. Remove the cap, as well as the gasket, if present. Turn on the cold water tap and fill the reservoir, and then replace the cap and gasket. Use a clean towel to wipe away any excess moisture from the surface of the reservoir and return the reservoir to an upright position. Carry it back to the base unit.
Step 4
Fit the bottom end of the reservoir into the base unit. Apply pressure to the top of the base unit until you are certain that the component is in place. Grip the top of the humidifier's motor housing. Pull the housing upwards until it comes free of the base unit.
Step 5
Inspect the area underneath the housing to determine whether the wick filter is installed. If necessary, remove a replacement filter from its packaging and install it into the base unit. Replace the motor housing.
Step 6
Connect the humidifier's power cord to the nearby electrical outlet. Direct the device's vents away from any nearby walls, furnishings or other obstacles. Press the power button or switch and set the humidifier to the desired setting.
Tips and Warnings
- Periodically clean the interior of the humidifier's reservoir and base unit with white vinegar to remove any scale buildup.
- Avoid allowing any moisture to come into contact with the motor housing or any of the device's other electrical components.
