The Atkins Diet and Zone Diet are two well-known diets based on the low-carb concept. Many types of food contain carbohydrates, including breads, rice, grain foods, starchy vegetables and fruit, according to MayoClinic.com. A low-carbohydrate diet limits these foods while increasing foods that contain protein and fats. Finding snacks on a low-carb diet can be a challenge.

Hard-Boiled Egg

Eggs fit into the low-carbohydrate diet plan, offering lots of protein. A hard-boiled egg makes a fillling snack. Boil several eggs at once, saving the rest of the eggs in the refrigerator for later. The hard-boiled eggs work by themselves sliced and seasoned with salt and pepper. Deviled eggs offer extra flavor if you want a little kick to your snack.

Meat and Cheese

The low-carb diet allows meat and cheese, either in meals or as snacks. Cold cuts or chunks of meat, such as turkey and ham are quick snack options. Meat and cheese alternating on a toothpick or skewer adds some variety. Or, have a meat and cheese roll-up for another carb-less snack. Layer a slice of cheese and a slice of meat. Roll the meat and cheese into a long tube shape to eat. An outer layer of lettuce offers a way to add more nutrients to your snack without adding carbohydrates.

Cottage Cheese

A bowl of cottage cheese satisfies hunger while being low in carbs. If plain cottage cheese isn't appealing, sprinkle your bowl with sunflower seeds or chopped nuts. Berries or chunks of apple are another way to dress up your cottage cheese. "Diabetic Living" recommends adding strawberries to your cottage cheese. Ricotta cheese is an alternative if you prefer the taste or texture over cottage cheese.

Jerky

Because of its meat base, jerky fits into the low-carbohydrate category for snacking. Jerky is convenient because it does not need refrigeration and often comes in individual packaging. Jerky fits easily into a lunch box or your purse, allowing you to take it wherever you go. Beef jerky is the most common option available, but you may also find jerky made from turkey, venison or other meats.

Sugar-Free Gelatin

A bowl of sugar-free gelatin offers a sweet snack that still fits within the low-carbohydrate plan. Many stores sell cups of premade sugar-free gelatin for convenience. Boxes of sugar-free gelatin you make at home are typically more cost-effective.

Other sugar-free snacks may also work on a low-carb diet. "Diabetic Living" suggests sugar-free frozen fruit bars and sugar-free pudding.
