Exercise is known to tone and shape muscles in your body. The logic behind exercise can be applied to the vast network of facial muscles to help the appearance of your skin and the contours of your face. The tiny vertical lines above and around your mouth are created when you sleep. They are the result of the creases formed in your skin when you sleep on your side. Exercising your facial muscles daily will help to strengthen the muscle which results in reduction in these lines.

Purse Exercise

Sit comfortably in a straight back chair facing foreword. Put your lips together and purse them. Keeping your lips pursed, lift them toward your nose and hold for a count of five. Relax your lips, purse and repeat the exercise five times. You may want to sit in front of a mirror initially so that you can watch the movements you need to make. Once you learn the exercise you can repeat it without using the mirror.

Three Pucker Exercises

1. Bring your lips together in a pucker. Hold the pucker and try to bring the sides of your lips and the corners of your mouth together. Squeeze your pucker to form "fish lips" and hold for a count of five. Relax and repeat five times. Again, begin using the mirror so you can be sure you are performing the exercise accurately.

2. Position your lips into a puckered kiss. Try to relax the kiss with your lips closed and gradually curl your lips under and into your mouth over the top of your bottom teeth and the bottom of your top teeth. Do this gently and hold for a count of 10. Relax and repeat five additional times.

3. Relax sitting upright in a chair. Open your mouth so your lips are barely parted. Pucker your lips and push the pucker away from your face then curl your top lip up toward your nose. Hold this position for a count of 10. Relax, and repeat this exercise five times.

Smile

Relax sitting upright in your chair. Keep your lips closed and in a neutral position, teeth barely apart. Smile as broadly as you can and stretch your lips as far as they will go while still keeping them together; do not open your mouth. Hold the broad smile position for a count of five. Finally, relax and then bring your lips back in to a pucker kiss position for a count of five. Repeat these two positions 10 times. The broad smile followed by the pucker stretches and contracts the muscles around your mouth.
