Using programs such as Weight Watchers or taking diet pills can become expensive methods for weight loss. One downside to popular weight loss programs is that when the program ends, you can gain the weight back. You can have weight loss success by creating your own program with lasting results. Increase your daily activity levels and adopt healthy eating habits to reach your weight loss goals.

Step 1

Get moving. Be more active to increase the number of calories you burn per day. Going to the gym is one option, but you can burn calories doing activities such as cleaning the house or gardening. Cleaning for one hour burns 246 calories, and gardening burns 219 calories. A night of dancing burns 422 calories per hour for a 160-pound adult, according to MayoClinic.com and NutriStrategy.com.

Step 2

Prepare meals with foods in their most natural state. Eat foods such as fresh produce, whole grains, fish, eggs and lean beef to give you more energy, increase your metabolism and help cut calories. Consuming whole foods keeps you feeling full, with fewer calories to increase weight loss.

Step 3

Record the number of calories you take in daily. Manage your calories by using an online tracking tool such as LIVESTRONG's My Plate. Subtract 500 calories from your daily average to calculate the number of calories you need per day to lose about one pound per week.

Step 4

Stay away from processed foods that encourage weight gain. Eating frozen dinners, deli meats or pre-seasoned foods loads your body up with refined sugars, fat and salt, which can sabotage your weight loss efforts, according to BBC News.
