How to Install a Child Bike Seat

If you are a cyclist with a child too young to ride independently, mounting a child seat onto your bicycle will allow the two of you to travel together. These devices often consist of two main components: a rack, which mounts to the rear of the bicycle, and the seat itself, which fits on the rack and may be removed when not in use. The mounting process for these devices involves the use of only basic hand tools.

Step 1

Position the seat rack over the rear wheel of the bicycle with the small bracket arms facing toward the front of the bicycle. Align the ends of the small bracket arms over the threaded seat-stay bosses located on the rear of the bicycle's frame. Use the Allen wrench to bolt the ends of the small bracket arms to the stay bosses; leave the bolts loose enough to allow for repositioning of the rack.

Step 2

Lower the end of the rack strut over one of the mounting points located above the bicycle's rear axle; if multiple mounting points exist, select the one that will allow you to set the rack at an approximately level position. Use the Allen wrench to bolt the ends of the rack strut to the mounting points; leave the bolts loose enough to allow for repositioning of the rack.

Step 3

Examine the underside of the front edge of the rack and locate the two adjustment bolts. Use the Allen wrench to turn the bolts until you have shifted the length and angle of the small bracket arms to the desired position. Shift the rack slightly until the front edge dips down at a 2- to 3-degree angle, then use the Allen wrench to tighten the bolts at the ends of the small bracket arms and rack strut.

Step 4

Lift the baby seat over the rack, with the front of the seat facing the front of the bicycle. Hook the front edge of the seat onto the front of the rack. Lower the back of the seat onto the rail, then press down on the back of the seat until you feel it click into place.

Step 5

Examine the bottom edge of the rear of the seat and locate the safety lock. Press the button set in the center of the safety lock, then slide the lock backward, out of its storage compartment. Examine the underside of the rack and locate the slot for the safety lock. Hold down the safety button on the lock, then insert the component into the slot on the rail; push in the safety lock until you feel it click into place.
