The neck is a vital part of the human anatomy. It helps get food to your stomach, air to your lungs and brain messages to the rest of your body. The neck muscles also help you to look up, down and side to side. If these muscles do not get enough exercise, then neck problems can arise. According to the Spine Abilene website, "the best preventive medicine for neck and back strain is movement."

Neck Problems

Serious neck injuries can be caused by automobile accidents, falls or contact sports. However, MayoClinic.com says that "most causes of neck pain aren't serious." Poor posture often leads to neck pain. For example, if you spend hours each day leaning into your computer screen, you can strain your neck muscles. Take occasional breaks from your everyday routine to exercise your neck.

Stretches

Flexible muscles allow your neck to have a greater range of motion. You can stretch your neck by slowly tilting your head back and looking toward the ceiling. Hold that position for at least five seconds. Another way to stretch your neck is to perform side extensions. Slowly lean your head to the right and hold it there for five seconds. Repeat the stretch on your left side. A third stretch you can try is neck rotations. Perform this stretch by slowly turning your head to the left and holding it there for 10 seconds. Repeat the stretch by looking to your right. Try to do 10 repetitions of these stretches at least three times a day.

Resistance Exercises

To strengthen your neck muscles, you can practice resistance exercises three times a day. You can perform the forward resistance exercise by placing both hands on your forehead. Provide light resistance with your hands as you try to move your head forward. Hold this position for about five seconds. Try a similar exercise by putting your hands behind your head and slowly moving your head backward. You can also place a hand on the side of your head to practice a side resistance exercise. Try to do at least five repetitions of each of these resistance exercises.

Massage

In addition to neck exercises, another way you can relieve stiffness in your neck is by getting a massage. According to YogaWiz.com, a neck massage can help relieve pain and it can relax your entire body. In addition, a massage can improve blood circulation through your neck. You can try massaging your own neck, but a trained therapist can help you get the most benefits from a massage.

Warning

Stop and consult a doctor if you experience any medical problems while performing neck exercises. According to Neck Solutions, you should see a doctor if you experience dizziness, blurred vision or pain shooting down your arm. You should also see a doctor if you experience severe neck pain or weakness in your hands or arms. These problems can be signs of a more serious condition.
