Try to think of what life would be like for skiers who tried to take to the slopes without the aid of a ski lift. These ubiquitous conveniences make recreational skiing possible and are found in a variety of forms, ranging from large gondolas capable of carrying dozens of people to surface lifts that pull single riders across short distances. Using these ski lifts properly requires you to comply with any rules or conditions the ski resort or lift operator imposes.

Lift Tickets

Before you get onto a ski lift, you have to make sure you have permission. Ski resorts typically require skiers have a lift ticket on their clothing before boarding a lift. These tickets must be attached to your clothing or available for easy inspection by resort employees and lift operators. If you don't have a valid lift ticket, you can't get on the lift, and you can't go skiing.

Use Rules

Many ski resorts and ski areas require skiers comply with safety rules and procedures or risk losing lift privileges. For example, Perfect North Slopes Ski Resort requires skiers to comply with a responsibility code. The code includes requirements that skiers know how to properly use any ski lift. Skiers must know how to board the ski lift, ride and disembark.

Safety Equipment

Ski lifts must also comply with state laws governing safety and use. These laws require ski lift operators to use lifts that have the proper equipment and features installed, as well as meet training requirements. For example, the state of Washington requires all ski lifts be operated by trained and qualified operators. Training must include education in such areas as start-up procedures, emergency procedures and how to handle malfunctions. Washington also requires all moving ski lift machinery be properly protected by removable guards that must be mounted in place during operation.
