When your pores become clogged with excess sebum, dead skin skin cells, sweat, makeup and other environmental dirt, you develop blackheads, whiteheads or other forms of acne. There are several pore extraction methods, that when performed gently and safely, can remove the dirt and debris from your clogged pores, leaving your skin looking and feeling cleaner.

Considerations

Pore extraction is a means to remove the dirt and oil from your clogged pores. According to Carefair.com, clogged pores come in two types. Blackheads are partially clogged pores which typically lead to more successful results, as there is less debris to extract. Whiteheads are clogged completely and may require more skill to extract, which a dermatologist or licensed esthetician can provide. When selecting a method of extraction, consider options that produce the results you desire while safely and gently unclogging your pores without damaging your skin.

Types

There are several types of pore extraction tools according to Buzzle.com. The two that most estheticians and dermatologists use are the metallic spoon extractor and the loop extractor. Both of these work by applying gentle pressure near the clogged pore to extract the debris. The spoon extractor may have a lancet on one end to pierce the head of a clogged pore, easing extraction. The smaller loops offer more precision for extracting tiny blackheads. Most major drugstores sell home versions in the beauty tools section for between $5 and $7.

Prevention/Solution

You have several options to help you prevent clogged pores. In addition to washing your face daily to remove make-up, dirt and oil, dermatologists recommend using an astringent containing salicylic acid to break down blackheads and whiteheads. According to Buzzle.com, blackhead removal strips are one of the best ways to remove blackheads. You can also use an exfoliating scrub like Clean & Clear Blackhead Clearing Scrub, which was named the best facial exfoliator by "InStyle" magazine.

Benefits

There are several benefits to pore extraction, most notably unclogging your pores, which can lead to healthier looking skin. Keeping your pores clean and clear can also help to prevent future acne breakouts as well as keep your pores from looking larger than they actually are.

Aside from the improved look of your skin, there are several benefits to having a professional perform your pore extractions versus doing it yourself. A licensed esthetician or dermatologist has the experience, training and proper tools to safely and gently perform your pore extractions, says the American Academy of Dermatology.

Warning

Most dermatologists do not recommend you extract your pores at home, according to skincare-news.com. According to Dermatologist Lisa Kellet, M.D., the main reason is that most people apply too much pressure when extracting. This can cause broken capillaries as well as spread bacteria below the skin's surface. However, Dr. Kellet suggests for those who choose to extract at home: Lightly steam your face first, and then apply gentle pressure to the clogged pores.
