Hepatitis C is an infection that is transmitted through blood, according to the National Institutes of Health; for example, intravenous drug users are at an increased risk of contracting hepatitis C. As of September 2009, no vaccination is available for hepatitis C. Untreated hepatitis C results in liver damage, which also includes patients who do not display symptoms. Treatment for hepatitis C include injections of medications, like alpha interferon and peginterferon, or ribavirin. However, hepatitis C patients can experience side effects from using either of these medications.
Alpha Interferon and Peginterferon Side Effects
According to the National Institutes of Health, alpha interferon is a medication used in hepatitis C therapy. Alpha interferon is "a host protein that is made in response to viral infections and has natural antiviral activity," and peginterferon is a chemical, modified form of alpha interferon that contains a "large inert molecule of polyethylene glycol," according to the National Institutes of Health. Common side effects of alpha interferon and peginterferon include reversible hair loss, fatigue, mild bone marrow suppression, muscle aches, depression, headaches, irritability, nausea and vomiting, weight loss, low-grade fevers and skin irritation at the injection site. These symptoms affect 10 percent of users, according to the National Institutes of Health.
Uncommon Side Effects
In addition to the common side effects, more uncommon side effects can occur from alpha interferon and peginterferon use. According to the National Institutes of Health, rare side effects include tinnitus, autoimmune disease, severe bacterial infections, hearing loss, retinopathy, suicide thoughts or attempts, thrombocytopenia, neutropenia, depression and seizures. Report any uncommon side effects immediately.
Ribavirin Side Effects
Ribavirin is an oral antiviral agent that can also be used in hepatitis C therapy, according to the National Institutes of Health. Possible side effects from ribavirin use are anemia, coughing, fatigue, sinusitis, irritability, itching, skin rash and nasal stuffiness.
