Preschool is helpful for many children, as they learn valuable academic and developmental skills. Preschool children learn basic math and language skills that will help them in elementary school. They also strengthen their memory skills, which prepares them for the retention of larger amounts of information. Through interactive learning games, you can help strengthen these concepts in your preschooler and better prepare him for future academic challenges.

Name the Animal

This simple multi-player, charades-like game helps children remember the names and characteristics of animals. One player takes a turn acting out an animal of her choosing for the other players. She does this by making the animal's sounds and performing the animal's typical movements. Players attempt to be the first to name the animal. The first child who names the animal gets to go next. The game continues until everyone has had a turn.

Spot the Missing Item

This memory-based game helps strengthen your preschooler's memory. It can be played with readily available toys or objects. Seat your preschooler with three objects he can identify in front of him. After he has studied the objects for a few minutes, have him close his eyes. Remove one of the items from his view. Ask him to open his eyes and tell you the item that is missing. Repeat this game, alternating the item you choose to hide. When you feel he has mastered three items, add more. You can encourage more complex learning by having him describe the missing item, such as what color it is and its function.

Spell Your Name

This short activity encourages your preschooler to spell her name properly. Write each letter of her name on a different index card. Mix up the letters when you're done. Have her sit down and try to rearrange the letters to accurately spell out her name. Reward her if she completes the task properly, and encourage her to try again if she does not.

Shapes

This shape-recognition game requires colored construction paper and white paper, as well as scissors and markers. Cut shapes out of different pieces of construction paper so there are a variety of colors. Next, trace and cut out the same shapes on white paper. Have preschoolers match the colored version of the shape with the white version. Reward those who match all shapes accurately.

Numbers

To play this simple math game, write numbers one through 10 on index cards, with each number on its own card. Place the numbers randomly around the room. Name a number, and have your preschooler try to find the number and bring it back to you. When this activity seems easy for him of if he knows how to count, set out a certain number of items, such as plates or chairs, and have him count them. He should then find the number and bring it back to you. If there are more children, make more number cards, and have children race to find and bring you the number. The child who brings it first is the winner.
