Kids can have fun preparing quick snacks with a little help from adults. They can be creative with vegetables and dips to make healthy snacks, or they can make frozen snacks that are sweet and fruity. Children can spend a few minutes or a couple of hours gathering ingredients and preparing their snacks, depending on the recipe. Your child will be proud of his snack creation, especially if he has made enough for family members to enjoy.
Fun Fruit Kabobs
Fun fruit kabobs take 15 minutes to prepare. Your child will need an adult's help to slice the fruit. The recipe calls for an apple and a banana, 1/3 cup of red seedless grapes, 1/3 cup of green seedless grapes, 2/3 cup of pineapple chunks, one cup of nonfat yogurt and 1/4 cup of dried, shredded coconut. You will also need a knife, four wooden skewers and two large plates. Spread the coconut on one plate and the yogurt on the other. Wash and peel the fruit and, after cutting the apples and bananas into chunks, slide the different fruit on to a skewer until the stick is covered. Roll the kabob in the yogurt and then in the coconut.
Ants on a Log
Older children and toddlers can safely make this nutritious snack. You will need celery sticks, peanut butter and raisins. You also need a knife to spread the peanut butter. Wash the celery, and cut the stalks into smaller celery sticks. Spread peanut butter on a celery stick to make the log. Place raisins on the peanut butter log to look like ants. Make enough ants on a log to provide a filling snack.
Ice Cream in a Bag
This clever recipe for homemade ice cream requires 2 percent chocolate milk, a snack-size zip lock bag, a quart-size freezer zip lock bag, ice cubes and rock salt. Pour ½ cup of milk into the smaller bag, and seal the bag closed. Put two to three cups of ice in the larger bag, and sprinkle a little of the rock salt. Place the milk bag into the larger zip bag with the ice cubes, and zip the larger bag closed tightly. Shake the bag vigorously, taking care not to tear either bag, until the milk in the smaller bag is frozen. Remove the smaller bag, wipe off the salty water and use a spoon to eat the ice cream from the bag.
