Home Remedies for a Face Rash

A variety of factors play into the appearance of a face rash. Allergies to medications, cleansers and facial soaps or foods may produce a facial rash. Rosacea and psoriasis are medical conditions in which primary symptoms may be a facial rash. Some face rashes are short-lived, or viral in nature, and do not need to be treated with medications. Home remedies may help reduce the discomfort of a face rash while it runs its course.

Gentle Cleansing

Gentle cleansing is an important part of skin care when dealing with a face rash. Scrubbing too hard may cause pain and increase any redness or swelling that exists. Fragrance-free cleansers without harsh chemicals reduce the risk of further irritation. Regular cleansing of the face prevents the buildup of bacteria and oils that may clog the facial pores and contribute to the rash. The National Rosacea Foundation suggests treating a facial rash by washing with warm water and the fingertips, rather than a washcloth or sponge.

Cool Compress

Applying a cool compress to the face can help reduce pain, swelling and itching that may occur with a rash. Use a soft cloth for the compress to avoid aggravating an angry rash. Each compress should be made with a new cloth to avoid spreading bacteria if the facial rash is due to a bacterial infection. Cool compresses can be used several times each day to relieve uncomfortable symptoms but should not be used in place of appropriate treatment, when needed.

Itch Relief

Home remedies for a face rash can include measures to control the itching caused by rashes such as poison ivy or allergic dermatitis. According to Botanical.com, an online resource for the medicinal use of plants, a witch hazel-and-water solution may be dabbed onto the face to relieve itching. A paste of baking soda and water can be spread on a facial rash to counter itching, as well. Those who suffer from a face rash may choose to apply an over-the-counter corticosteroid ointment to reduce localized inflammation on the face. Oral antihistamines may also be taken to lessen the itching of a face rash.
