Compression stockings provide pressure to the lower leg to increase blood flow. They are used by individuals to reduce the presence and severity of varicose veins, to prevent blood clots, also known as deep vein thrombosis, in patients after surgery, or to help with blood circulation in the legs and reduce swelling during air travel. In addition, compression stockings are used by athletes to facilitate more efficient leg recovery after workouts. These stockings are an effective tool for each of these purposes, but they must be put on and worn correctly to maximize the benefit.
Step 1
Sit in a chair and select one stocking. Evaluate the shape and determine where the toe and heel are located. Some compression stockings designate the appropriate stocking for the right and left foot.
Step 2
Fold the top half of the stocking down so that this portion is inside out. Align the stocking so that the toe portion is on top and the heel portion is facing down just as your foot is shaped when resting on the floor.
Step 3
Slide your foot into the stocking and adjust the toe and heel portion around your foot. Gently pull the middle so that it fits snugly around your ankle.
Step 4
Roll the inside-out half of the stocking slowly up your calf as you smooth it with your hand so that the top of the stocking ends just before your knee. It should stay tight along your leg as you roll it up.
Step 5
Ensure that the stocking is not twisted and that your foot fits appropriately in the designated portion. If the stocking is twisted remove and repeat the process to align it correctly.
Step 6
Repeat the process with the other stocking once you have successfully put on the first.
Tips and Warnings
- The key is to take your time and roll the stocking up slowly so that it fits tightly against your leg. Most errors occur when trying to put on the stocking too quickly. Aids such as a heel guide or special gloves can be used to help you put on the stockings correctly if you continue to have difficulty.
- Avoid tugging or pulling up the stocking, which can cause it to fit incorrectly.
