Home Psoriasis Treatment

Psoriasis is a disease caused by excessive production of skin cells. Its symptoms include itching and spots of skin that are thick, red and covered in silvery scales, which is a condition called plaque. Certain home treatments can be used to manage this disease.

Outlook

Symptoms of psoriasis may be managed with medications along with home treatments. But neither of these approaches to managing the disease will make it go away permanently because it has no cure. The PsoriasisNet website suggests that home treatments may provide relief from psoriasis symptoms and help medications that treat the condition work better.

Types

One home treatment for psoriasis is to take daily baths to remove psoriatic plaques. Application of moisturizers right after this may prevent dry skin and itching. According to MayoClinic.com, covering areas of the skin affected by plaque with moisturizers and plastic wrap overnight may facilitate removal of plaque in the morning. Exposing parts of the affected by psoriasis to sunlight for short periods of time is also a home treatment for psoriasis, adds MayoClinic.com.

Precaution

Lukewarm water and mild soaps should be used when taking baths, as hot water and harsh soaps can make psoriasis symptoms worse. Before exposing the skin to the sun, parts of the skin not affected by psoriasis should be covered with sunscreen.
