Toenail or fingernail fungus forms when the fungus enters through a crack in the nail. Nail infections are often spread in swimming pools and locker rooms. The toenails are more commonly affected; the nail will look thickened and discolored. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, about 12 percent of Americans experience nail fungus. There are several home remedies that have been touted as effective for nail fungus.

Vinegar

The Mayo Clinic says there is no clinical evidence that supports vinegar's ability to cure toe nail fungus, but that vinegar can inhibit growth of bacteria associated with nail fungus. The Mayo Clinic recommends soaking the feet for 15 to 20 minutes with a mixture of one part vinegar and two parts water. Soak feet daily, and if the skin becomes irritated, increase the amount of water in the mixture. Rinse well with plain water.

Vicks VapoRub

The Mayo Clinic says that Vicks VapoRub may help treat nail fungus by removing some forms of bacteria. There are no controlled clinical trials that support the effectiveness of Vicks VapoRub on nail fungus, but many anecdotal reports claim that it works. Trying the product on nail fungus will not harm you, but ask your doctor how often it is safe to use it.

Witch Hazel

Drugs.com says that witch hazel contains astringent and hemostatic properties, making it beneficial for nail fungus. The "Natural Health Magazine" issue of 2007 reports that using witch hazel on nail fungus can help kill the bacteria. It is recommended that anyone suffering from nail fungus soak a cotton ball in witch hazel and apply it to the affected area at least two times a week.
