Carnitine, also called L-carnitine, is a substance that the human liver and kidneys make, which helps the body turn its fat stores into energy. Most people have enough carnitine, but in some cases, a person can become deficient in the nutrient. Acetyl L-carnitine (ALC) is a dietary supplement that can be used to treat medical conditions or to help boost athletic performance. Dosages of this beneficial supplement vary according to the medical history and weight of the individual.
Improved Memory
Taking ALC may slow the progression of Alzheimer's-related memory loss, according to PDRHealth, an online version of the Physician's Desk Reference. Carnitine supplements may also help lift depression, a symptom that is often associated with Alzheimer's disease. The June 2003 issue of "Current Medical Research and Opinion" reported that cognitive function, in a sample of Alzheimer's patients, increased by 12 percent when ALC was given over a three-month period.
Increased Energy
The University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC) suggests that people diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome may feel an increase of energy and lower levels of fatigue after supplementing their diets with acetyl L-carnitine. A UMMC study showed that some people felt better after a one- or two-month regimen of ALC. The researchers add that because the study was small, more research may be needed to prove a firmer link.
Treats Male Sexual Dysfunction
Men who suffer from low sperm count, erectile dysfunction (ED) or the abnormal curvature of the penis that is characteristic of Peyronnie's disease may benefit from adding ACL to their daily diet. UMMC states that men who take prescription sidenafil for ED showed an improved response to the drug when they took ALC concurrently. The supplement may also improve sperm count and motility and may have a positive effect on the pain that is associated with Peyronnie's disease.
Decreased Hyperthyroid Symptoms
People who have an overactive thyroid condition, called hyperthyroidism, may experience fewer symptoms of the disease. Symptoms that are characteristic of an overactive thyroid include a racing heart beat, anxiousness or nervousness, trouble controlling body temperature and insomnia. UMMC reports that many of these side effects of too much thyroid hormone production may be controlled by taking daily doses of ACL.
