Acne sufferers turn to Proactiv Solution to treat and cure the cosmetic and emotional effects of acne. The manufacturers of Proactiv offer an entire product line of cleansers, toners, lotions and cosmetics designed specifically for acne-prone skin. However, some users of Proactiv have discovered side effects related to using the product. The active ingredient in the 3-Step Solution is benzoyl peroxide. Though it is sold over the counter, it is still a drug that is applied directly to the skin, and any drug can have side effects.

Dryness

Some users of Proactive Solution may experience skin dryness, especially in the first weeks of treatment. Proactiv's Customer Care resources note that benzoyl peroxide is the active ingredient in the solution; its purpose is to cause dryness in an effort to reduce excess oil production. Oil-free moisturizers, especially ones with an SPF of 15, are recommended to combat this side effect.

Swelling and Redness

Benzoyl peroxide causes skin inflammation in those with sensitive skin. As the skin swells, it becomes tight and appears reddened. Acne.org advises applying only small amounts of benzoyl peroxide as the skin acclimates to the topical drug. If inflammation is painful, discontinue use and consult a physician. Your doctor may advise a cool, wet compress to ease inflammation and any burning sensations associated with the reaction.

Dark Spots

According to the makers of Proactiv, people of color may develop dark spots on the areas treated with the product. The dark spots are due to a reaction with the benzoyl peroxide and are typically reversible.

Acne

It seems counterintuitive that a product designed to treat acne may actually be the cause of a breakout. Proactiv's Customer Care site advises that benzoyl peroxide may cause an initial breakout in first-time users or in those sensitive to the product, and suggests waiting up to two days between treatments to allow the skin to adjust.

Sun Sensitivity

The makers of Proactiv state that users are likely to be more sensitive to the sun. Advice for dealing with sun exposure includes moisturizers with an SPF of at least 15, which is available in the 4-piece Proactiv kit, and limiting time in direct sunlight.
