Nandrolone, also known by its generic name nandrolone decanoate, belongs to a class of medications known as anabolic steroids. According to SteroidUse.org, nandrolone increases the growth of muscles and bones in the body. Nandrolone is mainly used to treat anemia caused by renal insufficiency. Nandrolone is also used in AIDS patients to treat wasting syndrome. Nandrolone use causes several side effects on the body.

Increased Cholesterol

According to Drugs.com, nandrolone may cause a decrease in good cholesterol and an increase in bad cholesterol. Bad cholesterol causes hardening and narrowing of arteries, which leads to heart disease. Regular blood work is necessary in patients taking nandrolone, so blood cholesterol levels can be monitored.

Abnormal Stature

Nandrolone is normally prescribed to children with growth hormone deficiency. According to Drugs.com, nandrolone may cause bones in children to mature quickly without the children growing taller. Bone growth should be monitored every six months in children taking nandrolone.

Diabetes Mellitus

Drugs.com states that nandrolone may cause new-onset diabetes mellitus. Signs and symptoms of diabetes mellitus include increased thirst, increased hunger, increased urination, frequent infections and acetone breath. Nandrolone may also affect blood sugar levels in patients with diabetes. Blood sugars levels should be monitored carefully in diabetic patients taking nandrolone.
