Effexor is an antidepressant that contains venlafaxine, a type of selective serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor, or SNRI. Decreased Libido
Men taking Effexor can experience changes in their sexual ability or desire as a consequence of treatment, PubMed Health warns. A decreased sexual libido can cause men to be less interested in engaging in sexual or intimate activities with their partner. In clinical trials for Effexor, approximately 2 percent of both male and female patients reported experiencing a decreased libido, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. This side effect can persist for the duration of treatment and may cause problems in a man's intimate relationships. Before taking Effexor, men should discuss this side effect with their doctor and intimate partner.
Abnormal Ejaculation
Over 10 percent of men reported experiencing abnormal ejaculations or orgasms while taking Effexor during clinical trials, RxList reports. Affected men may experience a delay in orgasm due to prolonged erections. Alternatively, men may experience difficulty achieving orgasm during sexual stimulation.
Impotence
Men may experience impotence as a sexual side effect while taking Effexor. Impotence is a condition characterized by a recurrent inability to maintain or achieve an erection firm enough for sexual intercourse. In Effexor clinical trials, approximately 6 percent of men reported developing impotence. Though these side effects can continue for the duration of treatment, normal erectile function is typically restored after treatment with Effexor ends.
