One popular way of donating to an organization is donating a vehicle. This is a handy way of both making a charitable contribution and getting rid of a vehicle that you no longer want. Many different charities and non-profit organizations accept vehicle donations. These include various organizations dedicated to finding a cure for diabetes. Donating a vehicle to these organizations will allow you to contribute to the funding of diabetes research and, in most cases, is tax-deductible.
Step 1
Choose your organization. Multiple organizations are dedicated to fighting diabetes and funding research that accept vehicle donations. Examples include the American Diabetes Association and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (see links in References).
Step 2
Complete the charity's donation form. These organizations will schedule a tow truck to come pick up the vehicle after you have submitted a donation form. These forms will ask for your personal information and have questions about the car itself, including its make and model, any mechanical or cosmetic problems that it has and the mileage on the car. This information is used to determine if it is worth it for the organization to tow the car. Alternately, these web pages will have a phone number that you can call if you prefer to provide this information over the phone.
Step 3
Specify where you will leave the car and then keep it in that location until the diabetes organization has picked it up.
Tips and Warnings
- If you plan to make this donation tax-deductible, make sure you get an acknowledgment letter from the organization with all of your vehicle's information, which will include the value of your donation. It is always best to check with a tax professional before making any deductions on your tax forms. Your tax professional might suggest that you have the vehicle professionally appraised before it is donated.
