The gallbladder is a small organ that stores bile. It is located close to the liver and pancreas. Bile passes from the liver to the gallbladder and then on to the small intestine as it is needed. Fats and digestive juices can harden to create gallstones that block the flow of bile. When gallstones form and prohibit the gallbladder from releasing bile, it can cause inflammation, pain and other digestive problems. This is called cholecystitis.

Noninvasive Treatments

According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, drugs such as Ursodiol can dissolve small cholesterol stones. To be effective, these stones must be 15 mm or smaller. Ursodiol and Moctanin are approximately 40 percent effective in reducing or eliminating gallstones.

Lithotripsy can also be used to break up or dissolve gallstones. Lithotripsy uses shock waves in an effort to break up or shatter gallstones.

Diet

Avoid foods that are high in fats, red meat, fried foods and some dairy foods that can trigger gallbladder attacks. Trans fats foods that add cholesterol to the diet can cause the formation of gallstones, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC). Baked goods, donuts, butter, onion rings and other highly processed foods may cause the gallbladder to become inflamed and irritated.

Adding more fiber, fresh fruits and vegetables and using healthier cooking oils can eliminate some of the causes of cholecystitis. Prune juice and lemon juice can offer benefits when used to flush the digestive system and rid the body of debris.

Making changes to a person's diet, may relieve some of the discomfort caused by cholecystitis. It can also prevent damage to the gallbladder and surrounding organs. Eating smaller meals more often can take stress off the digestive system. Overeating can cause the gallbladder to become sluggish and prone to attacks, according to "Prescription for Nutritional Healing."

Alternative Therapies

Herbal remedies and accupuncture may offer benefits in preventing or reducing the discomfort associated with gallstones or cholecystitis.

Accupuncture can increase the flow of bile, reduce spasms and relieve the pain associated with gallstones. According to the UMMC, it may improve the overall function of the liver and gallbladder as well as other organs of the digestive system.

Milk thistle and alfalfa are herbs that can assist in cleansing the liver and gallbladder, according to "Prescriptions for Nutritional Healing."
