Nandrolone phenylpropionate belongs to a class of medications known as anabolic steroids. Anabolic steroids are injectable drugs used to treat aplastic anemia caused by kidney problems, osteoporosis and severe weight loss due to surgery or trauma or AIDS wasting syndrome. Nandrolone phenylpropionate may cause side effects.
Cancer
Nandrolone phenylpropionate may stimulate the growth of cancerous tumors. According to Inchem, prostate cancer and hepatic cancer are more common in patients who abuse nandrolone phenylpropionate and other anabolic steroids. Signs of liver cancer include yellowing of the eyes and skin, dark urine, clay-colored stool, swollen abdomen and pain in the upper right side of the stomach. Signs of prostate cancer include difficulties passing urine, increased urge to urinate and pain while passing urine.
Fluid Retention
According to Inchem, nandrolone phenylpropionate may cause fluid retention or edema. Edema is the abnormal accumulation of fluid in the circulatory system that may lead to high blood pressure and chronic heart failure. Signs of edema include swelling and puffiness under the skin, stretched and shiny skin, shortness of breath, breathing problems and chest pains.
Virilization
Nandrolone phenylpropionate may cause virilization in women, according to Inchem. The National Institutes of Health defines virilization as the development of male characteristics in women. Women who use nandrolone phenylpropionate and other steroids may develop irreversible male features, such as deepening of the voice, growth of facial hair, increased body hair, male pattern baldness and swelling of the clitoris.
