Aciphex, or raberprazole sodium, works by suppressing the production of stomach acid. Aciphex is a proton pump inhibitor that is used to treat stomach disorders that are caused by excess stomach acid. According to Drugs.com, Aciphex may cause thrombocytopenia, which is the medical term for a low blood platelet count.
Aciphex Uses
According to Drugs.com, Aciphex is used to treat and prevent erosive esophagitis, which is caused gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD. GERD is characterized by the backflow of stomach acid into the esophagus, which leads to injury to the lining of the esophagus. Aciphex blocks stomach acid, thereby preventing the backflow of acid into the esophagus.
Aciphex and Thrombocytopenia
Platelets are colorless blood cells that play an important role in blood clotting. They clump together in order to stop bleeding. Constant use of Aciphex can damage platelets. According to MayoClinic.com, thrombocytopenia, or low platelet count can be mild and cause few signs or symptoms, but in rare cases, the number of platelets may become so low that internal bleeding can occur.
Signs and Symptoms
According to MayoClinic.com, signs and symptoms of thrombocytopenia may include malaise, fatigue, easy bruising, purple spots under the skin, bleeding gums, blood in urine and stool, heavy menstrual bleeding and profuse bleeding from surgery and dental work. Affected patients should report these signs and symptoms immediately to their doctors.
Treatment
MayoClinic.com states that thrombocytopenia is treated using immunoglobulin medications, which increase platelet count. Thrombocytopenia is also treated with corticosteroids, and platelet transfusions. Patients taking Aciphex who develop thrombocytopenia should discontinue the drug in order to avoid further complications.
Complications
According to MayoClinic.com, untreated thrombocytopenia may lead to bleeding in the brain and gastrointestinal bleeding. Signs of bleeding in the brain include sudden severe headache, nausea and vomiting, weakness in arms and legs, decreased alertness, confusion and loss of consciousness.
