Psoriasis occurs when the body's immune system attacks and destroys skin cells. It's signs include scaly patches of skin that are raised and red. This condition has no cure but, there are periods when it goes into remission and times when it reoccurs.
Relationship
During periods of psoriasis remission--a time when psoriasis clears up temporarily, certain factors could make it flare up or come back. An infection is one of such factors. Medline Plus states that infections such as upper respiratory infections and strep throat can trigger an attack of psoriasis.
Types
Skin Care Physicians by the American Academy of Dermatology states that human immunodeficiency virus or HIV, thrush caused by candida albicans, staphylococcus skin infections, streptococcal pharyngitis or strep throat and viral upper respiratory condition are infections that can make psoriasis come back after a period of remission.
Prevention/Solution
Skin Care Physicians suggests that a healthy diet, adequate amounts of sleep and drinking enough water can help the body fight off infections that may trigger psoriasis. Psoriasis makes the skin itch, but scratching can cause breaks in the skin through which bacteria can enter the body and cause infection. Therefore, psoriasis patients should avoid scratching their skin to prevent infection.
