About Skin Care Products for Rosacea

Good skin care takes on additional importance for people with rosacea. The right skin care products can reduce rosacea; the wrong skin care regimen can make it more severe. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, when one has rosacea, the outer layer of skin, the stratum corneum, is fragile. That means the skin is irritated easily. Proper skin care products can soothe skin and calm irritation.

Medical Advice

A doctor is the first person to ask about skin care for rosacea. He is familiar with the type of rosacea the patient has and can recommend or prescribe the best products for it.

Avoid Irritating Ingredients

Avoid products that burn or sting the skin. The National Rosacea Society quotes its own survey that showed rosacea sufferers often experience irritation from alcohol, fragrance, witch hazel, menthol and salicylic acid. Many people with rosacea stay away from astringents and exfoliating products.

Sunscreen

Skin with rosacea tends to be especially sensitive to the effects of the sun. Read the label on any sunscreen you think of using. Be sure it offers a full spectrum of protection from ultraviolet A and B. The SPF should be at least 15. If the sunscreen causes irritation, rosacea sufferers should try a sun block that uses titanium dioxide or zinc.

Cleanser

Skin with rosacea needs gentle cleansing. Don't rub, buff or scrub the skin. Use a mild, fragrance-free facial cleanser. Water should be lukewarm, never hot. Among the most frequently recommended cleansers for rosacea are Cetaphil Gentle Cleansing Bar and Oil of Olay Foaming Face Wash for Sensitive Skin. Several prescription cleansers are available, including Plexion.

Moisturizer

The National Rosacea Society states that a good moisturizer plays a vital role in taking care of rosacea. The organization recommends products that help block irritants and impurities. Several moisturizers have neutralizers to lessen redness. ZenMed® offers rosacea moisturizers with SPF 30. B. Kamins has a line of skin care specifically designed for rosacea; its Booster Blue Rosacea line includes a moisturizer with SPF 15.

Considerations

Everyone has different skin needs, and there are different types of rosacea. One person's favorite skin care products might irritate the rosacea of someone else. Many companies offer samples or small travel sizes. It's best to try new skin care in small sizes, when available, until the right one is found.
