Herbs That Help to Heal Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis, commonly referred to as heel pain, is defined as foot pain that is caused by inflammation of the tissues surrounding the arch of the foot. The pain most often occurs in the morning after a period of inactivity. There have also been several herbal remedies that have been used to treat plantar fasciitis. It should be noted that a physician should be consulted before using any herb as a remedy for any condition.

Turmeric

Turmeric is a herbaceous perennial plant that is a member of the ginger family. This herb grows wildly in the forests of southeast asia and the root of the turmeric plant have been used in ayurvedic medicine to treat several medical conditions. Ayurvedic medicine has used the turmeric plant as an antiseptic and antibacterial agent to treat cuts, burns and abrasions. According to Digherbs.com, turmeric is useful for treating the pain and swelling associated with plantar fasciitis. A doctor's guidance should be sought, however, when using herbal medications.

Feverfew

Feverfew is a traditional medicinal herb that is readily found in North America, Chile, Europe and the Mediterranean. As its name implies, this herb has long been used as a remedy to reduce fevers as well as a treatment for headaches, arthritis and various digestive disorders. Feverfew reduces the release of serotonin and prostaglandins which are body chemicals that regulate muscle contraction and are often associated with causing migraine headaches. According to Digherbs.com, the reduction in prostaglandins from feverfew consumption will also reduce the pain and inflammation from plantar fasciitis. Before taking this herb, a doctor should be consulted.

Meadowsweet

Meadowsweet is a perennial herb that is native to the wet meadows of Europe and western Asia. This herb has long been used as a treatment to lower stomach acid, halt diarrhea and reduce flu symptoms. Meadowsweet contains the chemical salicylic acid which has long been used as a pain killer. According to Digherbs.com, the analgesic properties of meadowsweet along with the anti-inflammatory properties may make this herb an effective treatment for plantar fasciitis. A doctor should be consulted, however, before taking this herb.

Arnica

Arnica is a species of herbs that are a member of the sunflower family. There are more than 30 different types of arnica. The species Arnica montana has long been used for medical purposes. Arnica montana contains a lactone called helenalin which exhibits anti-inflammatory properties. Arnica montana is often used as an ingredient in ointments and liniments for external applications for treatment for bruises, strains and sprain. According to Digherbs.com, external application of arnica may be an effective treatment for the pain associated with plantar fasciitis. To ensure safe use, however, a medical doctor should be consulted.
