Amlactin XL is a nonprescription super moisturizing lotion for dry and rough skin. Amlactin XL contains Ultraplex, a patent pending formulation of three alpha-hydroxy acids, including ammonium lactate, potassium lactate, and sodium lactate. Alpha-hydroxy acids exfoliate dead skin cells and allow moisturizers to work on living skin cells.

Ammonium Lactate

Amlactin XL contains ammonium lactate, an alpha-hydroxy acid and humectant. Humectants retain water, and thus add to the moisturizing properties of Amlactin XL.

Potassium Lactate

Potassium lactate in Amlactin XL is used to maintain the pH of the alpha-hydroxy components. pH ranges from 0 as an acid to 12 as a base. If the pH is too acidic or basic for a chemical solution, it may not be as effective.

Sodium Lactate

Amlactin XL contains sodium lactate, which acts as humectant, pH regulator, and fights bacteria in the lotion.

Inactive Ingredients

The inactive ingredients in Amlactin XL lotion include purified water, emulsifying wax, light mineral oil, white petrolatum, propylene glycol, glycerin, stearic acid, xanthan gum, propylparaben, and methylparaben. Emulsifying wax keeps the oil and water in the lotion from separating. Propylene glycol keeps products from drying out. Glycerin is a solvent which can increase moisture at the top layer of skin, while drying out underneath layers. Stearic acid is used to thicken the lotion. Xanthan gum increases the shelf life of Amlactin XL lotion by stabalizing the chemicals in it, and also has skin conditioning effects. Propylparaben and methylparaben are preservatives.
