Chronic anxiety is anxiety that occurs consistently over a long period. General anxiety disorder is described by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) as an "overwhelming sense of worry and tension" throughout the day. According to SAMhSA, about four million adult Americans are affected by general anxiety disorder.
Pain
Constant muscle tension due to chronic anxiety can cause pain. Anxiety Disorders Association of America (ADAA) reports that muscle aches, soreness and headaches can result from anxiety. Some pain-related medical conditions can be worsened by anxiety. ADAA notes that anxiety can increase the pain of fibromyalgia, arthritis, migraines and back pain.
Treatment
ADAA explains that medication may be used to treat anxiety and reduce pain. Anti-anxiety and certain anti-depressants have been used to treat co-occurring anxiety and pain. Other treatments include cognitive behavior therapy, relaxation techniques and alternative treatments such as acupuncture, acupressure, reflexology, massage and yoga.
Lifestyle Choices
Lifestyle choices can help increase or decrease anxiety and the symptoms associated with anxiety. According to ADAA, exercising regularly and getting adequate sleep are beneficial. Eating healthful meals and limiting caffeine and sugar may decrease anxiety.
