Many men experience erectile dysfunction occasionally, but some have more frequent problems. Products such as Viagra are marketed to these individuals, with the claim that they can help to relieve problems attaining or maintaining an erection. Unfortunately, prescription medications often have unwanted side effects. There are other options for male enhancement that are natural and that may have far fewer side effects than prescription pills. Many natural male enhancement supplements have the same effects as their prescription counterparts. Always consult a doctor before taking herbal products to treat any condition.

Yohimbe

The yohimbe tree is the source for yohimbine, a chemical that has been used in traditional African medicine for sexual arousal and dysfunction. Yohimbe supplements are available over the counter in health food stores and are made in a variety of concentrations. According to the National Center for Complimentary and Alternative Medicine, taking yohimbe for long periods can be dangerous and this supplement can cause hypertension, headache and insomnia. Don't take yohimbe without a doctor's approval.

Dehydroepiandrosterone

Dehydroepiandrosterone, DHEA, is a naturally occurring hormone secreted by the adrenal gland. Levels of DHEA in the body decline as you age and DHEA supplements, according to the Mayo Clinic, have been effective in treating illnesses such as lupus and depression. DHEA is a precursor to both estrogen and testosterone and it may be useful in relieving erectile dysfunction that results from low levels of testosterone in the blood.

Ginseng

Ginseng is available at health food stores as both a pill and a tea. This versatile herb is widely used in Chinese medicine for treating everything from cardiovascular disease to adult onset diabetes. According to the Mayo Clinic, several research studies have shown that ginseng may provide benefits in treating erectile dysfunction. This appears to be related to the cardiovascular benefits of ginseng, since many cases of erectile problems are related to impaired blood flow. Consult a doctor before taking ginseng to treat any condition.

L-arginine

L-arginine is an amino acid that is synthesized into nitric oxide in the body. Nitric acid relaxes the blood vessels in the body, including those in the penis. Vasoconstriction, or narrowing of the blood vessels, is one of the causes of erectile dysfunction, so L-arginine may be useful in dilating the blood vessels, enhancing the functioning of the penis. Prescription medications for erectile dysfunction such as Viagra also act as vasodilators, but also cause more unwanted side effects.

Epimedium

Epimedium, or horny goat weed, is a traditional Chinese herbal treatment for fatigue, arthritis pain and erectile dysfunction. This herb may be able to increase levels of both testosterone and thyroid hormone, which can lead to resolution of erectile dysfunction. Talk to a doctor before you take epimedium.

Vitamin and Mineral Therapies

Vitamin E, folic acid, and zinc supplements have been suggested as potential treatments for erectile dysfunction, but there is not enough research evidence yet to support this. Some physicians are combining supplemental folic acid and vitamin E with the use of Viagra for men who don't respond to the prescription medication alone.
