In the "Land of 10,000 Lakes," Upper Red Lake in northern Minnesota is part of the largest lake in the state. The Upper Red Lake area combines a massive waterway with expansive forest land, creating a prime location for fishing and other recreational opportunities. The fishing resorts around the lake provide a comfortable place to stay while enjoying the great fishing experience that Upper Red Lake offers.

Identification

The 120,000-acre Upper Red Lake comprises the northern portion of Red Lake, which is the largest lake in Minnesota at 288,000 acres. Upper Red Lake is separated from Lower Red Lake by a peninsula which is populated by the small town of Ponemah. The lake is bordered on the east by Chippewa National Forest.

Resorts

The northern part of Upper Red Lake is home to Beacon Harbor Resort, which features tent and RV camping in addition to limited motel lodging and plenty of fishing accommodations. Travelers can also rent a cabin or park their RV on one of the campsites at the West Wind Resort, which is right on the shores of Upper Red Lake.

Amenities

In addition to lodging options, these resorts provide additional amenities that support fishing on Upper Red Lake. At Beacon Harbor, guests enjoy access to a private boat harbor, boat landing, bait and tackle store, a fish cleaning station and fish house storage. A bait and tackle store, fish cleaning room and fish house and boat rentals are available at West Wind Resort.

Cost

With all the different amenities available, visitors face other costs in addition to lodging such as rentals and fishing gear purchases. At Beacon Harbor, lodging rates vary depending on the season and amenities. RV sites range from $30 to $35, while motel and kitchenette units start at $50 and $150 respectively, as of 2010. In the wintertime, fish house rentals at West Wind Resort start at $50 for a two-person fish house that measures 8 feet by 8 feet. Lakeside cabins are rented for $150 to $300 a night and RV sites go for $30 or $45 a night depending on the time of year.

Fishing

Upper Red Lake is a haven for fishermen in both the summer and wintertime, and visitors at fishing resorts in the area get to take full advantage of fishing on the lake. The lake holds many different species of fish such as black crappie, walleye, northern pike, yellow perch and rock bass. Anglers can go out by themselves, or take advantage of the expertise supplied by one of the many fishing guides in the area.
