Weight training is performed in many ways to work every part of the body. Dumbbells, barbells, weight machines and rubber tubes are all used as resistance to increase muscle size and strength. Push-ups are a type of body weight exercise that can be done by themselves or integrated into other workouts.
Features
Push-ups are designed to work the chest muscles. They also put an emphasis on the triceps, shoulders and even abs. They are a convenient exercise that can be performed anywhere there is enough room to fit your body in a lengthwise position on the ground.
Function
To do push-ups, lie on your stomach with your hands directly under your shoulders. Push yourself straight up in the air until your arms are extended. Lower yourself down until you are about a fist width from the ground and repeat.
Form
When you do push-ups, your back should be completely straight, you should be looking slightly forward and your toes should be contacting the ground. This posture should be maintained throughout the whole exercise.
Variations
Push-ups can be done in more ways than just the conventional style. If you are just starting to exercise and your strength levels are low, perform push-ups with your knees on the ground or your hands placed on a table, bench or chair. This disperses most of your weight downwards. These are called "inclined push-ups." If conventional push-ups are not challenging enough, make them harder by elevating your feet while doing them. This will displace your weight towards your upper body. These are called "declined push-ups."

The biggest benefit of push-ups is that they work several upper body muscles at once and you can do them from your house, office or hotel room while you are on vacation.
