Fibromyalgia Syndrome (FMS) is a condition with uncertain causes characterized by muscle and joint pain as well as stiffness and tenderness. In addition, extreme fatigue, sleep disturbances and difficulty concentrating can accompany the soft tissue pain symptoms. It is estimated that 2 percent of the American population may suffer from FMS. Treating this condition requires multiple approaches from prescribed medications to natural health treatments.

Amino Acids

Some people with fibromyalgia do not digest protein properly. When digested correctly, proteins turn into amino acids. SAM-e (S-adenosylmethionine) is involved with more than 40 biochemical reactions in the body. It is naturally occurring and derived from the amino acids methionine and adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and plays an essential role in the nervous system. This, in turn, may be helpful in treating FMS.

Also, 5-HTP (5-hydroxy L-tryptophan) is related to the amino acid tryptophan and helps in the production of the neurotransmitter serotonin. It is believed that people with FMS have low levels of serotonin, and 5-HTP may help elevate these levels, ease pain discomfort, and assist with sleep disturbances by increasing serotonin levels.

Magnesium

Magnesium can help burn fat and turn it into energy. It is also needed for proper bone formation and muscle functioning. In a study conducted AT Grand Forks Human Nutritional Research Center, it was discovered that women with low magnesium levels had lower energy levels and did not burn fat, making the essential treatment of low-impact exercise and physical activity difficult for those with FMS.

Cayenne

Cayenne is a botanical remedy in which capsaicin is the main ingredient. When used in creams, lotions or salves, cayenne can reduce muscle pain and inflammation. Cayenne or capsaicin creams and lotions work by providing circulation and reducing inflammation, which can reduce pain for many FMS sufferers. This botanical herb can also be taken in capsules and is found in foods such as chili peppers.

MSM

MSM (methyl-sulfonyl-methane) is a basic nutrient required for the proper functioning of the body. Used as a dietary supplement, it may help treat the painful symptoms that accompany FMS. It can help with muscle soreness and cramps and has an anti-inflammatory effect. MSM can increase cellular permeability. Because of this increase, it reduces water pressure in cells and can allow toxins to be flushed out, reducing pain.

Vitamins

Vitamin B complex helps with stress and therefore may provide relief for FMS sufferers. Vitamin C is not only an immune booster, which can be helpful when living with chronic pain, it can strengthen connective tissue. Vitamin C can also boost energy levels. Vitamin E can help transport carbohydrates and fats into cells and allow foods to be converted into muscle.

More Alternatives

There are other natural treatment options for fibromyalgia including acupuncture or acupressure, diet, low-impact exercise and meditation. Be sure to talk with your physician before using alternatives. A combination of alternatives can be helpful in creating a natural health treatment plan for treating fibromyalgia.
