The State of New York provides an extensive system of mental health hospitals to its residents. For those in need of mental health services that cannot be handled with simple psychotherapy, a number of options for inpatient and outpatient care are available on a hospital basis. No matter what part of the state you live in, there is a mental health hospital that can help serve your needs.

New York City

The City of New York provides no less than five mental health hospitals for adults--one for each borough. The South Beach Psychiatric Center in Staten Island provides mental health services to both children and adults, while the Bronx, Brooklyn and Queens have hospitals specifically for the treatment of children. Hospitals provide for both inpatient and outpatient services. Some hospitals are affiliated with medical schools, such as the Bronx Psychiatric Center, which is affiliated with the Albert Einstein College of Medicine.

New York Suburbs

The suburbs of New York City have their own mental health hospital. The region offers only one hospital--the Rockland Psychiatric Center in Orangeburg. The facility is for adults only. There is a separate facility for children, also in Orangeburg. Rehabilitation, treatment and support are among the services offered by Rockland. The hospital is accessible by public transportation. Long Island has hospitals for both children and adults.

Southern New York

New Yorkers in the southern part of the state outside of the city can obtain mental health services at hospitals in Elmira and Binghamton. The hospital in Elmira is only for adults, while the hospital in Binghamton serves both children over the age of 5 and adults. Both inpatient and outpatient services are available. Binghamton offers access to residential and transitional services to help mentally ill adults live more self-sufficient lives.

Western New York

Two mental health hospitals provide service to Western New York state. Both Buffalo and Rochester have mental health hospitals, with a combined hospital for both children and adults at Rochester. The Buffalo Psychiatric Center is accessible by public transportation. The center provides service designed to make the mentally ill productive members of society, including support, crisis, rehabilitation, self-help and treatment services.

Capitol District and Central New York

The vast middle of the State of New York has a number of hospitals providing service. Mental health hospitals stand at Poughkeepsie, Utica, Albany and Syracuse. These facilities all service adults, while the Albany, Utica and Syracuse hospitals provide services to both children and adults. The Capital District Psychiatric Center in Albany attempts to rehabilitate clients using both therapy and skill-building groups.
