What To Look For
Electric shavers are available in two types: rotary and foil. A rotary shaver is one that uses two or three flexible circular blades that spin and a foil shaver has blades that are shielded by thin pieces of steel foil that swing back and forth. Determine if you would like a rotary shaver or foil shaver and any specific features you're looking for, such as pop-up trimmer or pulsonic technology. Consumer Reports claims that consumers find that foil shavers provide a closer shave than rotary shavers, however, rotary shavers were found to be quieter and easier to clean.
Common Pitfalls
Electric shavers can get very expensive whether choosing foil or rotary, compared to manual disposable razors. It's also recommended to wet-shave, meaning to keep face wet at all times during the shaving process, reports Today contributor Corey Greenberg. However, there are very limited options of wet and dry shavers on the market.
Where To Buy
Electric shavers are available for purchase at many different retail stores. Major retail locations include department stores such as Bloomingdales and Macy's, electronic stores such as Best Buy and discount retailers such as Wal-Mart and Target. Online retailers such as Amazon carry many different brands and models of electric shavers and can be a good place to comparison shop.
Cost
Electric shaver prices can vary greatly depending on brand and model. A typical range for quality electric shavers is $70 to $250 and up as of September 2010. Generally, more features, such as automatic shut off, pop-up trimmer, low-battery warning and pulsonic technology, increase the cost of an electric shaver.
