What To Look For

When it comes to cycling clothing, the first thing to look for is the fit. Bike clothing manufacturers make cycling apparel for the casual rider and the rider looking for performance. The best cycling jackets are designed for performance. When it's time to put on a jacket it's normally winter or rainy weather. Cycling jackets are made to be lightweight and pack lots of warmth. Look for jackets with a tailored design for the riding position of a cyclist. A lot of the time this means the back of the jacket will be longer than the front because you spend a lot of time leaning forward and you don't want the heat escaping. Also look for something that will block the wind because this is where you will experience the most of the change in temperature. A high, close-cut collar and water resistance keeps you warm and dry.

Common Pitfalls

There are some really expensive jackets and some don't work as well as they should. Check online and magazine reviews to see how they tested with users. However, it's better to spend a little more on a good jacket instead of buying a lower quality item that will not protect you from the weather. It will certainly make your riding experience more enjoyable.

Where To Buy

You can purchase a jacket at your local bike specialty shop during the fall and winter seasons. Buying online allows you to find what you're looking for year-round, but you don't have the opportunity to try it on for fit. Places like REI, Amazon.com, Performance Bicycle, and Jenson USA will have them as well.

Cost

Bike jackets can range in price anywhere between $100 to close to $400 for the really high-performance apparel as of 2010.
