Helen, Georgia, offers plenty of indoor and outdoor activities to suit a variety of personal preferences and budgets. Situated in the North Georgia mountains, the climate is mild and proves to be enjoyable during the summer and winter months. The small town is an equally popular spot for romantic getaways and family vacations and comes in third as Georgia's most visited place.
Folk Pottery Museum of Northeast Georgia
The Folk Pottery Museum of Northeast Georgia features the handicraft of Southern natives. There are over 180 pottery items encased in glass, and the wood-framed space, with its glass walls, is a work of art in itself. Through plaques and multi-media presentation, the museum also chronicles the role that pottery has played in the south over the years and outlines reasons for its significance.
Live Tarantulas Gallery
Those who want to add the freak-out factor to their trip to Helen can visit the Live Tarantulas Gallery. There are over 30 adult tarantulas on display at the exhibit, including species from Africa, Asia, and South America. In addition to the tarantulas, the gallery showcases a python, bearded dragons and iguanas. During your visit, ask to handle the most docile creatures for a truly hair-raising experience. The gallery also sells hand-crafted cages for those who have their own tarantulas or other reptiles at home, and offers professional advice to those seeking information on breeding and caring for a pet tarantula.
Chattahoochee Stables
Explore the North Georgia mountains on horseback with a one-hour ride through three and a half miles of trails led by a guide from the Chattahoochee Stables. About half of the ride is along the scenic Chattahoochee River, and riders will even cross the river during the summer months. The horses are fully-trained, and there are a range of horses available to fit the skill level and size of each rider. Children under five years of age are allowed to ride with an adult rider.
Cool River Tubing
To cool off during the summer months while taking in the sights, take a tubing trip down the Chattahoochee River. There are two tubing trips, which range from one hour to two hours. Each guest is given a life preserver to ensure their safety. The tubing trip follows the river through the village of Helen. Water slides, BBQ grills, and changing rooms are also available on the Cool River Tubing premises. Pets are welcome.
Anna Ruby Falls
Known as the Gateway to the Appalachians, Anna Ruby Falls is located within the borders of the Chattahoochee National Forest. The park features a double waterfall formed from the mergining of two waterways, Curtis and York Creeks. To reach the falls, follow the signs up a paved path with a bridge crossing. At the end of the climb, there are observation decks that offer visitors a place to snap a photograph. The hike is just under one-half of a mile, and there are benches placed along the path for those who need to rest on the way up.
Balloons over Georgia
For an outdoor adventure you will not soon forget, take a ride in a hot air balloon over North Georgia. The flight offers views of Lake Lanier, the Atlanta Skyline, and a number of mountain ranges, including the Appalachians. Keep your eyes open for a glimpse of a deer below or hawk above. Flights are generally available each day of the week but are subject to safe weather conditions.
Duke Creek Mines
Try your hand at striking it rich in Helen at Duke Creek Mines. You can search for gold and gems, such as rubies and emeralds, at the panning tables. Indoor and outdoor tables are available. If you find a stone, the staff will cut and polish the stone, as well as offer advice about setting it in jewelry. Read up on local mining history during your visit or browse the gift shop.
