Over the years, Las Vegas has become increasingly child-friendly to attract a larger clientele than just serious gamblers. There are hotels that are targeted specifically toward families and a wide assortment of activities that have nothing to do with the gaming business. There is also a whole different world off the main Las Vegas strip that offers healthy, outdoor fun for the kids.
Themed Hotels
If you want to stick to the tried-and-true that the Vegas strip has to offer, consider one of the many themed hotels that will keep any kid's attention. The Excalibur Hotel has knights on horses; Circus Circus has a giant amusement park; the New York; N.Y. Hotel boasts a roller coaster; Treasure Island features pirates; and the Luxor Hotel has a huge arcade and an IMAX movie theater. Almost all the hotels are constantly creating new attractions to out-do one another, so make sure to check around to see what is happening. Nature Spots
If you are looking for a break from the traditional Vegas scene, head toward the outskirts of the city with its beautiful, natural landscape. There is hiking, rock climbing and horseback riding in Red Rock Canyon State Park, river rafting in Black Canyon and tours of the Techatticup gold mine. For an upscale base for your family adventures, try Red Rock Resort and Spa on the edge of Las Vegas. If you want to give the kids a real experience of nature, consider Red Rock Campground. The campground is a basic outdoor area in the park, and you'll need tents, food, water and everything else required for a woodsy experience.
Attractions for Kids
While just about every hotel has some kind of show going on, there are a number that are great learning experiences for kids. These include the ongoing Blue Man Group and Cirque du Soleil shows, as well as numerous science- and history-based exhibits that change from year to year. Recent shows include "Bodies ... The Exhibition" and "Titantic: The Artifact Exhibition." To make things easier, consider staying at a hotel that is close to several shows. Hotels Without Casinos
If you are looking to teach your kids the best way to gamble is to not gamble at all, you might want to stay at one of the many hotels in Vegas that don't have a casino. These include Desert Paradise Resort, Summer Bay Resort and Comfort Inn Las Vegas. Many of the gambling-free hotels make up for it with pools, spas and luxury accommodations.
Hotels Near Museums
While most people come to Las Vegas to be entertained and win money, there are actually a good number of museums that can keep kids enthralled all day. There is the Natural History Museum, the Lied Discovery Children's Museum, the Nevada State Museum and even the Pinball Hall of Fame. Most of these are off the strip, so find a hotel that is conveniently located near attractions you may want to visit.
