What To Look For
When selecting razor blades, you have to first decide whether you want to purchase disposable razors, a cartridge razor or a safety razor. If you'd rather just toss out the entire razor, then maybe instead of disposable razors, a cartridge razor is a good choice. They are more expensive than disposable razors, but contour more to your face and do not rust or wear as easily. The cartridge razors such as Gillette Fusion ProGlide also feature fine blades and moisturizing strips that protect your skin. Safety razors are more of an investment than cartridge razors, but are designed to last a lifetime and give a much closer shave. Since they are far more durable, they will end up costing far less over your lifetime.
Common Pitfalls
Disposable razors are convenient and cheap. However, this is an example of getting what you pay for. Disposable razors rust easier, causing cuts, and will wear out much quicker than cartridge razors. While the cartridge razors are more expensive, you will ultimately have to purchase them less because they are better quality and will last longer.
Where To Buy
Razors are available at virtually any drug store or grocery store. Walgreen's features a vast selection and competitive prices. You can also buy many accessories under the same roof, such as shaving gel or batteries if you are using a battery-enhanced cartridge razor. Walgreen's also features many sales and coupons on its men's razor selection.
Cost
A package of about five disposable razors costs about $5, while the base of a cartridge razor will run about $10 to $15 with replacement cartridges at around the same price. Safety razor bases cost anywhere from $25 to $60. The blades themselves are cheap to replace as they are just straight double-edge blades and are fairly inexpensive, running only a few cents a blade.
Accessories
Regardless of how nice of a blade you have, your face may still break out if you do not properly moisturize. Use high- quality shaving cream such as the Art of Shaving's unscented shaving cream applied with a shaving brush to protect your skin from shaving friction. Finish it off with Kiehl's Ultimate Men's After-Shave and Balm and Moisturizer.
