Activia is a yogurt manufactured by Dannon that claims to help regulate the digestive tract with the addition of probiotic cultures. Although Activia is not a medicine and should not be used to cure disease, probiotic cultures can help make the digestive system more efficient in some people.

Active Ingredient

Activia contains Bifidus regularis, a living microorganism that is safe to eat and remains alive during the shelf life of the product. The World Health Organization states that "good" bacteria, such as Bifidus regularis, are beneficial for the gastrointestinal tract. The addition of friendly bacteria leaves less room for bad bacteria; it may also strengthen the immune system, prevent infections that cause diarrhea, and alleviate symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome.

Products

The 4-oz. yogurt cups are available in vanilla, blueberry, strawberry, peach, mixed berry, cherry and prune. "Light" versions come in the same flavors, as well as key lime and strawberry banana. A 24-oz. tub is also offered in vanilla, plain and light vanilla. Activia 7-oz. fruit smoothies contain 160 calories and are available in strawberry, peach, prune, mango and strawberry banana.

Who Can Eat Activia?

Although Activia is typically safe for anyone, people with milk allergy or lactose intolerance should ask their doctor before consuming Activia. Activia also recommends that women who are pregnant or nursing should also speak with a physician before eating Activia.
