Tennis is a highly active sport; the average tennis player burns hundreds of calories during the course of a game. For those who play often, membership at a tennis club provides benefits such as easy access to well-maintained courts, the opportunity to play in organized tournaments, the availability of tennis professionals to help you improve your game and the opportunity to meet new friends and socialize at club facilities. There are many such clubs in Colorado, where you can play tennis year round; and many of the larger clubs are located in or around the city of Denver.
Clubs
Large athletic clubs in Colorado that feature tennis facilities include the Denver Tennis Club, located at 400 Forest Street in Denver; the Rolling Hills Country Club, located in Golden Colorado, west of Denver; the Green Wood Athletic Club, which you can find in Greenwood Village just south of Denver; and the Colorado Athletic Club, which is in the Monaco, just south of Denver.
Courts
An important consideration when choosing a tennis club is the ratio of tennis courts to tennis members; you want courts to be available at times convenient for you to play. The Denver Tennis Club is equipped with eight hard courts, two clay courts and two soft carpet courts; all courts feature windscreens and sun-protection canopies. Rolling Hills Country Club has four indoor and four outdoor courts, which are tournament quality, according to the club. Greenwood Tennis Club has seven indoor clay courts, and Colorado Tennis Club boasts more than 20 tennis courts.
Club Features
The Denver Tennis Club's men's locker room includes a sauna, and towel service is available. Rolling Hills Country Club features an outdoor swimming pool, a golf course, two restaurants and banquet facilities. The Greenwood Athletic Club has indoor and outdoor Olympic-sized pools, basketball and squash courts and a gym and fitness studio where Pilates, yoga and martial arts classes are organized. The Colorado Athletic Club features a whirlpool and sauna in the locker rooms, a gym and exercise studio with yoga and spin cycling classes, an indoor and outdoor pool, a basketball court, squash courts and a café.
Lessons
Most tennis clubs offer members tennis lessons and clinics for a fee. At the Denver Tennis Club, in 2010, an hour and a half lesson with the club's professional, Dan Gray, is $144 for members and $160 for non-members. A one-hour private lesson with tennis professional Noah Tondre at Rolling Hills Country Club costs $48; a half-hour long lesson is $26. A one-hour long private lesson at the Colorado Tennis club is $60 and a half-hour lesson is $40.
Considerations
Tennis club memberships can be expensive and may charge a one-time initiation fee, in addition to yearly dues. For example, in 2010 the Denver Tennis Club charges new adult members (over 23 years of age) a $750 initiation fee, in addition to the $750 in annual dues. Many clubs, including the Denver Tennis Club, Rolling Hills Country Club, Greenwood Athletic Club and the Colorado Athletic Club provide discounted rates for families, youth and senior memberships.
