One of the major cities in Southern California, San Diego is the second largest in the state, and is well-known for its mild climate, miles of coastline and beaches, access to Tijuana across the border and much more. There are plenty of options when it comes to exploring the city, and thankfully San Diego is pet-friendly, which means you can take your furry friend with you to a variety of places.

Beaches

Relaxing on one of the beaches of San Diego is the perfect way to spend an afternoon, and regardless if your pet likes to swim in the ocean or play in the sand, there are several beaches that not only allow pets, but welcome them. Places like Mission Beach and Ocean Beach allow your pets to roam without a leash, and feature calm inlets as well as roaring surfs and plenty of sand for your pet to enjoy.

Parks

While many parks allow you to bring your pet along for a walk, run or cycling ride, there are a few parks in San Diego that go one step beyond, allowing your pet total freedom to run and play as they see fit. Fiesta Island is one of the most popular areas for dog owners because not only are there plenty of sand dunes and calm waters for cooling off, but also an off-leash location where your pet can roam free and romp in the sand and surf without restriction.

Restaurants

Whether you prefer a sit-down meal or a quick bite at a sandwich shop, there are hundreds of restaurants to choose from in San Diego. While many have no-pets-allowed policies, there are others which consider your companion just as important as you are. Perhaps one of the most popular, located directly off of Ocean Beach, is O'Bistro, which is a casual eatery featuring outdoor sitting areas and custom water bowls for your animal. Fairmount Diner is also another choice, with an outdoor patio that is perfect for you and your dog to enjoy the weather while eating.

Special Events

Given the size of San Diego, there is always something going on, day or night. This includes special events for you and your pet, such as the Pet Training and Adoption Event in September, which features massages for your pet as well as pet training and adoption services if you want to add another member to the family. There is also the Pet Care event that takes place in August, which teaches you and your pet shared exercises for use when working with a leashed animal as well as teeth cleaning lessons and more.

Walking

Night or day, walking the streets of San Diego is a pastime enjoyed by millions of visitors and residents alike, year after year. It is the one activity that you can enjoy with your pet whenever you want, so long as you keep your animal leashed and clean up any feces. Whether you head down to the beach or stretch your legs out through the residential districts or downtown San Diego, you can always enjoy a little light exercise with your furry companion.
