What To Look For

According to The Times of London, anyone with greasy roots should look for talc-based dry shampoo, as it will sop up all of the excess oil. Eventually, you will actually have to wash your hair with water and liquid shampoo to ensure that it does not develop an offensive smell. When that time comes, Columbia University's Health Services website recommends using a shampoo that contains either ammonium or sodium lauryl sulfate--SLS. Shampoos that contain one of these two ingredients are known as detergent shampoos.

Common Pitfalls

An email asserting that SLS causes cancer has been circulating around the web for quite some time. The American Cancer Society asserts the email is not based on any specific research or studies. As for the origins of the email, it is possible that it was part of a smear campaign created by companies that manufacture SLS-free products.

Where To Buy

You can find both dry shampoo and detergent shampoo at your local drugstore. Walgreens.com shows that both Tresemme Fresh Start Dry Shampoo and Organic Root Stimulator Herbal Cleanse Dry Shampoo are available in branch locations. A wealth of detergent shampoos, including Neutrogena Clean Shampoo and Head & Shoulders Classic Clean Shampoo, are both available at Rite Aid. If you are looking for a specialty brand, such as Frederic Fekkai or Rene Furterer, you should head to a beauty retailer such as Sephora or ULTA.

Cost

At a drug store, dry shampoo can cost anywhere from $4 and $8. A detergent shampoo will typically cost less than $7. If you choose to buy the products at a beauty retailer, expect to pay between $11 and $23 apiece for dry shampoo and detergent shampoo. All estimated prices are as of September 2010.
