Overview

Having a child is a life-changing, monumental event. To experience the miracle of life firsthand is an awe-inspiring moment in many marriages. But, there are some married couples who would rather not become parents and they are satisfied and happy just being with each other. To babyproof your marriage, there are several steps you can take.

Step 1

Wear condoms when you have sex. Condoms can help prevent sperm from reaching the fallopian tubes and fertilize an egg. If you want to play it extra safe, get condoms with spermicidal lubricant.

Step 2

Use birth control pills. Birth control pills, also called oral contraceptives, are a popular form of contraception. Visit your doctor to get a prescription. They work by altering the hormones that are responsible for ovulation. The end result is you cannot get pregnant because no egg is being released.

Step 3

Get a tubal ligation procedure. Tubal ligation is an outpatient procedure that causes permanent sterilization of the woman. This procedure is often referred to as getting your tubes tied. The tubes in this case are the fallopian tubes. You will not be able to get pregnant following this procedure.

Step 4

Choose a vasectomy. The vas deferens are tubes that are responsible for carrying sperm to semen. During a vasectomy, a surgeon will cut away a small section of the vas deferens which run down the sides of your scrotum. They then get sutured shut and you are no longer able to get your wife pregnant. But be aware that you will need to ejaculate 15 to 20 times after the surgery to ensure that all the sperm has been cleared out.

Step 5

Use a diaphragm. A diaphragm is a dome-shaped rubber apparatus with an exterior flexible ring. Three hours before intercourse, place spermicidal cream in it and then insert it into your vagina and over your cervix. This prevents the sperm from reaching the uterus.

Tips and Warnings

  • If you use birth control pills, make sure to take them the same time every day and use them as directed. If you skip a day or take them occasionally, your ovulation cycle can start back up and you can get pregnant.
  • If you use birth control pills, be aware of the side effects they can cause and the contraindications. For example, if you are over 35 years old, you should not smoke as this can raise your chances for blood clots.
