What To Look For

Read the ingredients of any drink that claims to provide a boost of energy. A beverage may be labeled as an energy drink, but that doesn't mean it will actually contain ingredients that efficiently provide the human body with healthy energy. The best energy drinks in terms of health will be those that contain natural ingredients and necessary vitamins and minerals. In some cases, the best energy-boosting drink may be one that contains a significant amount of protein, but these may actually be labeled as meal-replacement shakes or nutritional drinks.

Common Pitfalls

Most energy drinks contain excessive amounts of caffeine and sugar. While both of these ingredients may indeed provide an energy boost, it will likely not last long and end with a crash. In addition, relying on caffeine and sugar-filled drinks for energy too often can lead to weight gain, insomnia, rapid heartbeat--even diabetes or increased blood pressure. Some energy drinks may also contain herbal stimulants that are not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration. The results of large doses of these stimulants may not be fully understood, particularly when used regularly over long periods of time.

Where To Buy

Energy-boosting drinks are available in just about any grocery store, and may even be sold in economical packs six or 12. Most gas stations and convenience stores will also carry a wide variety of chilled single cans or bottles of these types of beverages. Popular energy-boosting drinks may be found in select vending machines, as well.

Cost

The average cost for a single can or bottle of most types and brands of energy drinks is $2. The size of the can or bottle may vary significantly, however--anywhere from 2 to 16 oz. The cost per can is generally less if purchased in packs.
