What To Look For

When shopping for a waterproof rain tent, look for a product that is lightweight with a dry entryway. Waterproof tents tend to weigh more than the average tent, sometimes up to 10 pounds. While heavy tents can be carried between two people it is best to seek out a lightweight tent that is easy to carry. Also, look for a tent with a dry entryway vestibule; this keeps water from flooding into the tent when entering or exiting. A flooded tent can ruin food and soak bedding material, making it an uncomfortable and dangerous shelter.

Common Pitfalls

Beware of "water resistant" tents; a water resistant tent and a waterproof tent are in two different leagues. Water resistant can often refer to material that is meant to resist moisture rather than a tent that can withstand heavy rain. Water has a knack of finding its way into the smallest areas, through thin fabric and even seams. If the seams of a tent are not protected with water resistant tape, water likely will seep into your tent. Check the tent's packaging to verify it is "waterproof."

Where To Buy

Purchase a waterproof tent at your local sporting goods store. Sporting goods stores typically have a wide variety of tents , and a sales associate should be able to show you tents that provide protection against heavy rainfall. Some stores will have the tents set up so you may look inside before purchasing; ask if this is available. Pick up the packaged tent to check the weight and ensure you'll have no problem carrying it to your camping destination.

Cost

As of September 2010, waterproof rain tents range in price from $150 to $350 depending on the size, quality and extra features provided. Tents at the lower end of this price range are typically small with no added features to protect extra gear or add user comfort. Alternatively, tents on the highest end of this scale are usually large with added features and a popular brand name. Mid-price tents typically provide the best value, offering decent size with a few added features.
