What To Look For

Whether intended for paddling around the bay or white water rafting, kayaks offer many features, including waterproof hatches for keys and wallets, a paddle storage compartment, high-back seats and larger cockpits. When purchasing a kayak, consider if you want a single or double/tandem kayak. Consider the material the kayak is made from, whether it is plastic, fiberglass, Kevlar, carbon fiber or wood. For the thirsty, many kayaks also provide cup holders. Choose the features that fit your needs. Waterproof hatches may prove to be invaluable in many circumstances. Find a seat and cockpit that are comfortable for your body type.

Common Pitfalls

It is important to match the kayak with your needs. Many people choose the wrong type of craft for the kind of kayaking they plan to do. Ocean/sea kayaks are longer, with a wider middle and narrow tips, whereas whitewater kayaks are shorter for easier handling and maneuvering. Crossover kayaks are recommended for both whitewater and the ocean. It is important to know how you will use your kayak before making your purchase.

Don't get stuck leaving the kayak at home. If your car is not large enough to transport a kayak and you do not wish to purchase a holder for the roof, folding kayaks are also available through many websites and sporting goods stores.

Where To Buy

Kayaks are available directly from manufacturer websites, at sporting goods stores, such as Dick's Sporting Goods or Cabela's, or kayaking websites, such as Old Town Canoe and Ocean Kayak. Although not all kayak rental companies sell kayaks, many will sell used kayaks when they purchase new vessels. It is recommended to rent a few types of kayaks during test runs prior to buying your own.

Cost

Plastic kayaks tend to be the least expensive, starting around $150 to $200, as of September 2010. Depending upon the material, and if they are inflatable or folding, kayaks may range up to $1,000. For the best price deals, consider buying at the end of the season, especially for sea and ocean kayaks.

Accessories

Rudders are available for sea/ocean and crossover kayaks. A rudder attaches to the back of the kayak and is steered by foot pedals. Although rudders are helpful when navigating through tides, they are often ineffective in choppy waters because the tip of the kayak clears the water.
