Orlando offers plenty of after-school activities for children and teens looking to exercise their bodies and their minds. Along with after-school tutoring programs, there are plenty of things for children to do after classes that will improve their physical fitness, increase their skills and give back to the community.
Team Sports
You can take part in the After-School All-Stars, a daily program that lets you participate in healthy activities such as horseback riding, golf, sailing and basketball, along with getting tutoring help and learning new activities. If you are Jewish, you can take part in soccer, baseball and other sports at the Roth Community Center of Orlando.
Performing Arts Classes
You can take dance classes at one of the studios in Orlando and learn different dance moves while improving your overall fitness. Dance programs are offered in different styles, including ballet, jazz, tap and hip-hop. Orlando's proximity to several major theme parks makes it a prime location for young dancers, singers and actors.
You can also take gymnastics classes or learn cheerleading skills--the National High School Cheerleading Championship is held in Orlando and the area offers many different private cheerleading camps and programs.
Youth Golfing
Orlando is a hotbed for golf and there are several programs designed to get youth golfers involved in the sport. Along with school golf teams, programs like the Orlando Minority Youth Golf Association help you to learn about the sport along with learning valuable life lessons such as self-reliance, discipline and honor associated with the sport.
Volunteerism
You can give back to the community--along with adding impressive credits to your future college resume--by partaking in volunteer opportunities within the community. If you are 15 or older, you can help the Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children by volunteering at guest services or the pharmacy, or baby-sitting for the children of employees. You can also volunteer through the Teen Library Corps and help with events at Orlando public libraries.
Arts and Crafts
The city's Cultural Arts Section gives you the opportunity to explore your artistic side with plenty of creative outlets. You can visit the Pottery Studio and learn how to work with clay. You can also take part in a Natural Expressions workshop which combines nature lessons with an opportunity to create art, based on the natural elements discussed.
