Whether you're visiting the Southwestern, Southcentral, Interior or Inside Passage Regions of Alaska, you'll be able to reel in various species of salmon and trout in addition to exploring acres of wilderness on overnight raft fishing trips. These all inclusive excursions allow you and your fellow anglers an opportunity to enjoy secluded areas and premier fishing spots in picturesque habitats.

Types

The big-game fish in Alaskan waters include rainbow trout, arctic grayling, arctic char and northern pike. However, the most common type of fish to be reeled in by anglers belongs to the salmon family. King salmon, sockeye salmon, pink salmon, silver salmon and chum salmon swim along these waters, giving you plentiful opportunities to take something home.

Regions

Alaska's Southcentral and Southwest regions feature the most popular destinations for overnight raft fishing expeditions. The Talachulitna and Talkeetna rivers, in addition to Lake Creek, can be found in the Southcentral region of Alaska, where anglers often reel in rainbow trout, arctic graylings and char. The Southwest region includes the 550-mile peninsula and Lake Clark National Park and Preserve, Katmai National Park and Togiak National Wildlife Refuge. Within this region, the Alagnak River and American Creek are filled with trophy size rainbow trout and Pacific salmon.

Cost

Depending on the outfitter company and its services, a typical five-day, five-night raft fishing trip usually costs a little over $3,000 and includes about a maximum of six people per raft. Seven-day, six-night trips range between $3,500 and $4,200. Some touring companies, such as Alaska Rainbow Adventures, provide deluxe Alaska lodge style float trips with prices over $4,300. These deluxe trips include weather-proof tents for two anglers, cots, sleeping pads, heated dining tents and hot showers. In addition, they use 18-foot catarafts or self bailing rafts with custom rowing frame, floor and padded high back seats.

Services

Outfitter companies like Wilderness Place Lodge provide you with all-inclusive fishing trips and services that make your raft fishing trip more comfortable and worry free. Services include internal ground transportation; float plane service, meals, snacks, raft equipment, camp gear, tents and rafting guides. However, you are responsible for bringing personal gear such as sleeping bags, backpacks, rain gear, and fishing license. Most outfitter companies provide you with fishing gear and tackle, but some ask you to bring your own.

Features

Raft fishing trips allow you to travel at the river's pace in a serene environment. This leisurely pace highlights the remote and popular fishing spots along many of Alaska's rivers and creeks. The trips often combine reeling in the big catch and bear viewing. Companies like Big River Lakes allow you to fish and witness brown and black bears trolling for salmon; this generally happens from June through August. It's also quite common for you to see eagles, moose, lynx and wolves. With a lush forest backdrop, rugged terrain, mountain ranges and overhanging glaciers, overnight raft fishing trips offer you a premier experience of the Alaskan wilderness.
