What To Look For

Those who overpronate when they run or walk most likely have low or flat foot arches. This leads the walker's foot to naturally lean to the inside of the gait, causing a misalignment and potential injury to the ankle and knee. Motion control shoes are shoes with more support under the arch and more support on the inside of the shoe, to help keep an overpronator standing straight. Get a gait analysis at a sports injury clinic or athletic shoe store. A clinic doctor or very experienced shoe salesperson can help you determine how severely you overpronate. Bring a pair of your old sneakers or shoes shopping with you. This can illustrate just how severe your problem may be. Different brands of sneakers and shoes will call their cushioning different things. Some will have gel, some will have "HydroFlow." Try different types to see what feels comfortable to you. You will also want to test out how rigid the shoe's upper is on the inside. Some overpronators prefer very rigid support on the upper, while others prefer more support in the arch and not as much rigidity in the upper.

Common Pitfalls

Don't make the mistake of not trying on shoes first. While buying online may be the most convenient or cheapest option for you, make sure you take time to try the shoe on. Consider having a professional sizing before buying. Too often, those who overpronate--as well as those who don't--buy shoes based on what size you think you are, leading to additional pronation problems and potential injury. Avoid purchasing a shoe that is too rigid. Support is good, but your foot needs to move around as well. Make sure you visit a chiropractor, orthopedist, podiatrist or other health professional before purchasing your shoes. A health professional may be able to fit you for orthotic inserts for your regular shoes.

Where To Buy

Motion control shoes can be purchased at athletic shoe stores, online at specialty shoe stores and at some department stores. Brands like Brooks, Asics and Mizuno all have highly rated motion control sneakers and have online stores.

Cost

The Mizuno Wave Renegade 4 is a favorite motion control shoe of "Fitness" magazine and retails for $124. The Brooks Addiction 8 offers superior support for overpronators and costs $94.99. Other motion control sneakers can be found between $50 and $150, depending on the brand, store and sales.
