What To Look For

Because a good night's sleep can make or break your day's productivity, consider the following factors if you plan to buy a double air bed. Where will you use it--at home as a temporary bed, for guests or on a camping trip? Do you care about portability? While some air beds are thin and lightweight, others, when inflated, have the dimensions of a queen-size bed. Does the deflated air bed store easily or do you have to clear out a closet? If possible, find a store with an inflated display model, one you can try before you buy.

Common Pitfalls

Like a down quilt, air beds distribute air into pockets. Unfortunately, all air beds are not created equal in terms of construction. After bearing weight, some may lose air or air pockets can rupture. Check any weight limitations on the packaging before purchasing. In addition, if cells rupture even if the bed is new, some retailers won't take it back. Check the manufacturer's and store's product warranty.

Where To Buy

Retailers like Bed, Bath and Beyond, Dick's Sporting Goods, REI and Cabela's carry many air beds. Aerobed, a Chicago manufacturer, offers its products on its own website; they are also available at other retailers. Air beds such as those by Coleman are widely available through Walmart, Target, Amazon and many camping supply stores.

Cost

Prices for double air beds vary widely, depending on quality, size and features. As of August 2010, Aerobed listed its queen-size air bed at $250. It's the priciest among air beds. Wenzel's Insta-Bed Queen Raised Sure-Grip Bottom with Built-In Pump was listed at $120. Coleman's 4-in-1 was offered for $50.

Comparison Shopping

Aerobed, a Chicago-based manufacturer, received high reviews in terms of durability, comfort and product quality. Though not cheap, the company provides a three-year warranty on pumps and valves and a one-year warranty on the mattress. Coleman's 4-in-1 is a suitable choice for a camping trip. The double air bed has a zipper, if you want to make it into a king, or you can stack the two. Reviewers gave top ratings to the Wenzel Insta-Bed Queen. The company offers a one-year warranty.
